How do you define “inclusion?” What does it mean for an environment to be inclusive?
Inclusion is the idea and practice of allowing all individuals, regardless of their identity, background, or capabilities, to not only be included but to feel valued and respected. An inclusive environment is a setting in which this inclusivity that we’ve just defined is present, protected, and promoted. It is an environment in which differences and diversity are celebrated. It is also a place where resources are spared to accommodate a broad spectrum of needs and experiences.
What are the particular benefits of online environments for inclusion?
Online environments provide multiple benefits for inclusion. First off, digital environments provide accessibility to not only information but also collaboration and communication. In virtual environments, individuals can increase their geographic reach, allowing them to participate in discourse and access resources they wouldn’t otherwise be able to. Some online environments also provide levels of anonymity that can make it easier for individuals who would otherwise be cast out for some aspect of their identity to participate.
What are the particular challenges in online environments for inclusion?
While they have many benefits, online environments breed their own set of challenges for inclusion. One of the biggest of these challenges is the growing digital divide. Some people have different access to the internet and its many benefits. This is especially prevalent in low-income areas and with older generations. Another struggle is the double-edged sword of anonymity online. As mentioned previously, it can boost inclusion. Still, anonymity can also lead to misbehavior, such as cyberbullying, trolling, and harassment, as individuals can hide behind a false identity.
